Bridge Workspace Setup Process

1

Reset to Essentials

Navigate to Window > Workspace > Essentials, then reset the workspace to ensure consistent interface layout

2

Access Project Files

Use the Favorites tab to navigate to Desktop, then drill down through Class Files > Bridge Files > Australia Photo Shoot folder

3

Optimize Thumbnail View

Adjust the thumbnail size slider until images are clearly visible and filenames are completely readable

Navigating to a Folder

Before diving into image comparison and rating, let's establish a consistent workspace environment that matches professional standards.

  1. To ensure we're working with identical interface layouts:

    • Go to Window > Workspace > Essentials.
    • Then go to Window > Workspace > Reset Workspace.
  2. At the top left of the window, you should see a Favorites and a Folders tab. These panels are your primary navigation tools for efficient file management.

  3. You should already be viewing the Favorites tab, so in the list of favorites click on Desktop.

  4. Navigate through the following folder hierarchy: Class Files, then Bridge Files, and finally into the Australia Photo Shoot folder. This simulates a typical project structure used in professional environments.

  5. At the bottom right of the window, adjust the thumbnail size using the slider zoom slider until you can clearly see the images and read their complete filenames. Proper thumbnail sizing is crucial for efficient image review—too small and you miss important details, too large and you lose the overview perspective.

Workspace Consistency

Always reset your workspace before beginning a new project to ensure all panels and tools are in their default positions, preventing workflow confusion.

Ranking Images & Using the Loupe

Now comes the critical decision-making phase. Professional image selection requires more than casual browsing—you need to evaluate technical quality, composition, and project suitability with precision. We'll select four exceptional images from this collection using Bridge's advanced comparison tools.

  1. Switch to the Preview workspace for detailed image analysis. Go to Window > Workspace > Preview. This workspace maximizes the preview area while maintaining easy access to thumbnails and metadata.

  2. Click once on the koala 7.cr2 thumbnail. You may need to scroll through the thumbnails in the Content panel to locate it.

  3. Hold down Shift and click on koala 8.cr2 to display both images side-by-side. This comparison view is invaluable when choosing between similar shots—a common challenge in professional photography workflows.

  4. While both shots appear similar at first glance, we need to evaluate their technical quality, particularly focus accuracy—a make-or-break factor in professional image selection.

  5. In the large preview of koala 7.cr2, click directly on the koala's eye. This activates the Loupe tool, providing 100% magnification for critical focus evaluation. The eye is typically the most important focus point in wildlife photography.

  6. In the large preview of koala 8.cr2, click on the corresponding eye area. You should now have dual Loupes active, enabling precise side-by-side comparison. Notice that koala 8.cr2 demonstrates superior focus quality—this type of technical assessment separates professional-grade selections from amateur choices.

  7. Click once on the thumbnail of koala 8.cr2 to select it exclusively. Avoid double-clicking, as this will launch the image in Photoshop.

  8. Click anywhere on the loupe to close the magnification view.

  9. Bridge's star rating system (0–5 stars) provides industry-standard image classification. Press Cmd–4 (Mac) or CTRL–4 (Windows) to assign this image a 4-star rating, indicating strong technical and creative quality.

If you encounter the message about "Labels and Rating are stored in XMP files," check Don't show again and click OK. This ensures your ratings remain embedded with your files across different systems.

  10. Return to the Essentials workspace: Go to Window > Workspace > Essentials.

  11. Select koala 3.cr2 and evaluate its qualities.

  12. Press Cmd–4 (Mac) or CTRL–4 (Windows) to assign a 4-star rating, indicating this image meets professional standards.

  13. Select koala 9.cr2 for evaluation.

  14. Press Cmd–5 (Mac) or CTRL–5 (Windows) to assign the highest 5-star rating, reserved for exceptional images that could serve as portfolio pieces or key campaign assets.

  15. Select sydney aquarium—shark.cr2 for assessment.

  16. Bridge offers multiple rating methods for different workflow preferences. In the Content panel, click the rightmost dot below the thumbnail to assign a 5-star rating (as shown below). Note that these rating dots only appear when thumbnails are sufficiently large, and the dots in the Preview panel are display-only and cannot be used for rating assignment.

    set 5 stars

  17. Complete the rating process by assigning the following ratings to these remaining images. Use either keyboard shortcuts or the dot method based on your workflow preference:

    sydney aquarium.cr2: 4 stars
    sydney cityscape.cr2: 5 stars
    sydney opera house—front.cr2: 3 stars
    sydney opera house—side.cr2: 5 stars
    sydney street performers.cr2: 4 stars
  18. Now leverage Bridge's powerful filtering capabilities to focus on your top selections. In the Filter panel on the left, under the Ratings section, Shift–click on the 3 stars to display only images rated 3 stars or higher. This immediately eliminates lower-quality images from your view, streamlining the selection process.
