In this exercise, you'll master one of Lightroom's most powerful yet underutilized features: selective color adjustment. Rather than applying broad changes that affect your entire image, you'll learn to target specific color ranges with surgical precision, adjusting their luminance and saturation independently. This technique separates amateur edits from professional-grade work, allowing you to create images with depth, mood, and visual impact that commands attention.

Adjusting Luminance

We'll begin by manipulating the luminance values—the lightness and darkness of specific colors—to create dramatic contrast and depth in your image.

1. If you have not imported the photos that were imported in Exercise 2E:
   • Navigate to the Library module.
   • Click Import at the bottom left of your screen.
   • In the import dialog, locate Source on the left panel and navigate to Desktop > Class Files > Lightroom Class, then select the Develop folder.
   • Ensure Add is selected and highlighted at the top of the preview area.
   • Click Import in the bottom right corner to complete the process.

2. In the Library module's Catalog panel (left sidebar), click Previous Import to access your newly imported files.

3. Select the second swan photo (_CAS4927). This image provides excellent color separation for demonstrating selective adjustments.

4. Press D to enter the Develop module, where the real magic happens.

5. In the Navigator panel, click FIT (if not already highlighted) to optimize your viewing experience.

6. Locate and expand the HSL / Color / B & W panel on the right sidebar—this is your command center for color precision.

7. Ensure HSL is highlighted. This mode gives you independent control over Hue, Saturation, and Luminance.

8. Click Luminance in the sub-options below HSL. Luminance controls are essential for creating depth—they determine how light or dark specific color ranges appear, independent of their saturation levels.

9. Click the Targeted Adjustment tool in the panel's top-left corner. This tool is a game-changer—it automatically identifies which color sliders to adjust based on where you click in your image.

10. Click on a blue area of the sky. You'll notice the cursor changes, indicating the tool is active and ready to make targeted adjustments.

11. Press the Down Arrow key approximately 8 times to darken the blue tones. Watch how the Aqua and Blue values adjust automatically in the panel—this targeted approach ensures you're affecting only the colors you intend to modify.

12. Toggle the Switch at the top-left of the HSL / Color / B & W panel off and on several times. This before/after comparison is crucial for evaluating your adjustments objectively. Leave it on to proceed with your enhanced version.

Adjusting Saturation

Now we'll enhance the visual impact by selectively boosting saturation in key color ranges, then fine-tune luminance values to achieve perfect balance. This two-step approach—saturation followed by luminance refinement—is a hallmark of professional color grading workflows.

1. In the HSL / Color / B & W panel, click Saturation. You're now controlling the intensity and vibrancy of specific color ranges without affecting their brightness.

2. Drag the Yellow slider to its maximum value: + 100. This extreme adjustment helps you see the full potential of the effect.

3. That level of saturation is likely too aggressive for professional work and may appear unnatural or over-processed.

   Pull the Yellow slider back to + 60—a more refined adjustment that enhances without overwhelming. This demonstrates the importance of restraint in professional editing.

4. Use the Switch to toggle your changes several times. Train your eye to recognize when adjustments enhance versus when they become distracting. Leave the switch on to continue.

5. Return to Luminance for final refinements. This back-and-forth between saturation and luminance adjustments is typical in professional workflows.

6. Reactivate the Targeted Adjustment tool if it's not still selected. This tool remains your most efficient method for precise color targeting.

7. Click on the grass area in the lower portion of your image. This targets the green color range that defines the foreground elements.

8. Press the Up Arrow key 6−8 times to brighten the grass tones. This creates separation between foreground and background elements, adding dimensional depth to your composition.

9. Click the Done button below and to the right of your image to complete the targeted adjustment process.

10. Click the Before & After icon for a comprehensive view of your transformation.

    The results should be striking—you've created enhanced contrast, improved color separation, and added visual depth while maintaining a natural, professional appearance. This level of selective control is what distinguishes expert-level photo editing from basic adjustments.
