Types of Excel Selections
Single Cell
Click once to select an individual cell. The cell address appears in the Name box for reference.
Cell Range
Click and drag to select adjacent cells, or use Shift+click to define start and end points.
Entire Rows/Columns
Click row numbers or column letters to select complete rows or columns with all their cells.
Non-contiguous Ranges
Hold CTRL while selecting to create multiple separate selections across different areas of the worksheet.
Basic Cell Selection Methods
Single Cell Selection
Click directly on the desired cell. The cell address will display in the Name box in the upper right corner.
Range Selection by Dragging
Click the first cell and drag with the left mouse button pressed through adjacent cells to select a contiguous range.
Range Selection with Shift
Click the first cell, then hold Shift and click the last cell to select all cells between them.
Keyboard Arrow Selection
Use Shift plus arrow keys to extend selection from the current cell in any direction.
The first cell in any range selection remains white while still being part of the selection. This is normal behavior and indicates the active cell within the selected range.

Essential Keyboard Shortcuts
Select all cells in the worksheet (17+ billion cells)
Select from current cell to end of data or column
Select from current cell to end of data or row
Return to cell A1 from anywhere in the worksheet
Add non-contiguous cells or ranges to selection
Adjust selection endpoint to reduce over-selection
For non-contiguous selections, hold CTRL after making your first selection, then continue selecting additional ranges or individual cells while keeping CTRL pressed.
Selecting to Data Boundaries
First Key Press
CTRL + Shift + Down Arrow stops at the last cell containing data in the current column.
Second Key Press
Press the same combination again to extend selection to the absolute end of the column (row 1,048,576).
Horizontal Selection
Use CTRL + Shift + Right Arrow to select to the end of data horizontally, then to column XFD on second press.
To quickly deselect any current selection, simply click on another cell or press any arrow key on the keyboard. This immediately clears the selection and moves to a new location.
