Welcome back to our comprehensive AutoCAD tutorial series. In our previous sessions, we've been developing enlarged plan areas with precision and purpose. As you can observe in the Jack and Jill area, I've strategically incorporated 48, 24, and 12 scale dimensions across multiple zones—including the Jack and Jill area, guest bath area, fireplace area, and kitchen. This intentional approach will demonstrate a powerful technique that streamlines your workflow and enhances drawing clarity.

Let's begin by executing a zoom extents command and saving our current work. We're now ready to create our A2.2 sheet file—a critical component in any professional construction document set. Navigate to File > New, and select our established template. Save this new file with the designation "vdci-a202.dwg" to maintain our project's naming convention and organizational structure.

Since this is a sheet file, our first priority is establishing the foundational reference. We need to attach our model file into model space using the xref attach function. Access the Insert tab and proceed with confidence.

Select Reference Attach from the ribbon. Navigate to ACAD 301 and locate your target file.

Choose your CAD 301 plan model file from the directory. Configure this as a standard attachment positioned at coordinates 0,0 with a scale factor of 1, then confirm with OK. Your complete model now appears in the workspace, ready for the next phase of development.

Now we'll transition to the layout environment—where professional presentation takes shape. Examining our template file, you'll notice we currently have layout environments configured only for 8.5x11 and 11x17 formats. For our A2.2 sheet, we require a larger format. Right-click on the layout tab icon and select "New Layout" to create our custom environment.

The system generates "Layout 1" by default, but professional practice demands descriptive naming conventions. Click once to activate the layout, then right-click and select "Rename." Input "VDCI 22x34" to clearly identify this layout's purpose and dimensions. This naming strategy becomes invaluable when managing complex project files with multiple layouts.

Our current environment displays an 8.5x11 format with a pre-built model view window that doesn't serve our purposes. Delete this viewport to prepare for our custom configuration. Next, we'll modify the environment dimensions to accommodate our project requirements. Right-click the layout icon and access the Page Setup Manager.

The dialog confirms our "VDCI 22x34" layout name. Click "Modify" to access the configuration options. The PDF output setting is appropriate for our workflow.


Paper size selection is crucial for professional output. Choose "ANSI D expanded 34x22" from the dropdown menu. The icon updates to reflect "34x22," confirming our ANSI D 34x22 selection. Verify that plot origin remains at 0 and scale factor stays at 1. Ensure the system utilizes our VDCI standard 0.1 color table file, and confirm landscape orientation is selected for optimal drawing presentation.

With these parameters configured correctly, click OK and close the interface. We're now prepared for the next critical step: integrating our title block. Execute Reference Attach to begin this process.

Navigate to your file directory and select "VDCI TTLB 22x34." Click Open to proceed. Maintain the attachment setting with a scale factor of 1 and insertion point of 0,0, then click OK. Observe that crop marks align perfectly with paper extents—this confirms proper setup. Save your work with Ctrl+S to preserve this reference attachment.

Our next objective involves inserting the TBTX file as a block element. Navigate to the Block panel and select Insert. Since this file isn't currently in the drawing, click "Browse" to locate it externally.

Scroll through your directory and select "VDCI TBTX 22x34," then click Open. The system may display previous settings from earlier sessions—deselect "Specify insertion point on screen" since the TBTX file is designed to register perfectly with the TTLB file. Insert at coordinates 0,0 with a scale factor of 1, ensuring the block remains unexploded, then click OK. The attribute dialog populates, prompting for project information. Input "drawn by you" for the drafter field, "checked by the boss" for the checker field, "as noted" for the scale field, and "A2.2" for the sheet number. Confirm with OK and save your progress.

You can now see the completed title block information displayed in the lower portion of the sheet. Execute zoom extents and save again to ensure all changes are preserved.

We'll now populate the drawing area with four strategically positioned viewports. I'll begin in the bottom-left quadrant and proceed clockwise—this sequence optimizes our workflow based on the current attribute configuration. Our first element will be the "drawing title 2" block, which features a half-width format ideal for our layout. Access Block Insert and browse your file directory.

Locate and select "VDCI drawing title 2," then click Open. Enable "Specify insertion point on screen" with a scale factor of 1, then click OK. Position this element in the bottom-left area as the cursor tracks your movement. The system prompts for attribute information including drawing label, drawing name, and scale. For now, we'll advance through these prompts without populating data by pressing Enter repeatedly.


Zoom in to examine our progress. The title block displays designated areas for the drawing label, drawing name, and scale information. Notice that "SCALE" appears as static text—this was embedded in our drawing title file during creation, while the variable information uses attributes. To modify attribute values later, simply double-click the block to access the attribute editor. For demonstration purposes, I'll cancel this dialog and zoom out to continue our setup.

With our first title block positioned, we'll now add the corresponding viewport boundary. This "quarter-size no-plot view" will define our drawing area precisely. Return to Block Insert, browse your directory, and select "no-plot view quarter." Open this file, enable "Specify insertion point on screen," and position it adjacent to our title block.

Fine-tune the positioning using the Move command from the Home tab. Select the no-plot view symbol and relocate it to align perfectly with the title block. This precision ensures professional presentation standards. Save your work to preserve these adjustments.

Now we'll efficiently replicate these elements for our remaining three viewports. Use the Copy command with a crossing selection window to capture both the title block and no-plot view. Create three additional copies positioned in the remaining quadrants, maintaining consistent spacing and alignment throughout. This systematic approach ensures uniformity across all viewports.

Here's a crucial detail that demonstrates professional attention to visual hierarchy: when the no-plot layer is disabled, you'll notice the layout appears incomplete due to missing viewport separation. To address this, we'll add a vertical line on the Title Block layer that creates proper visual division between viewports. Draw this line from the bottom horizontal guide to the top, creating a clean perpendicular separator that enhances drawing organization.

Save your work and re-enable the no-plot layer to see the complete layout structure. Execute zoom extents followed by zoom real-time to verify all elements are properly positioned and scaled. This completes our foundational setup for the A2.2 sheet file.
