Metaballs Animation in After Effects
Master Organic Motion Graphics with Professional Techniques
Core Techniques in This Tutorial
Gaussian Blur Effect
Creates the foundational softening effect needed for organic blob shapes. Set to 50 pixels for optimal blending between adjacent elements.
Simple Choker
Expands or shrinks object edges to create the characteristic metaball merging effect. Applied at 50% for balanced organic fusion.
Roughen Edges
Counterintuitively used to smooth shapes rather than roughen them. Border at 25 with specific settings creates fluid boundaries.
Metaballs are blobby spherical shapes that can meld together when near each other. They're versatile tools for modeling organic shapes and are known for resembling cell division in biology.
Setting Up the Adjustment Layer
Create Adjustment Layer
Double click the Amoeba layer to enter the precomp, then go to Layer > New > Adjustment Layer. This will apply effects to everything below it.
Apply Gaussian Blur
Search for Gaussian Blur in Effects & Presets panel and drag it onto the adjustment layer. Set the blur value to 50 pixels.
Add Simple Choker
Apply Simple Choker effect to the adjustment layer and set Choke Matte to 50. This creates the edge expansion needed for blob merging.
Effect Settings Configuration
Despite its name suggesting roughness, Roughen Edges can actually smooth shapes when configured properly. Set Edge Sharpness to 1 and Fractal Influence to 0 for organic smoothing.
Layer Mode Configuration
Ensures all metaball elements are configured simultaneously
Makes layer blending modes accessible in the timeline
Allows colors to overlap and blend naturally for organic appearance
Click Main Comp to see the final result with all effects applied
Creative Applications
Cell Division Animation
Perfect for biological visualizations and scientific content. The organic merging mimics natural cellular processes effectively.
Liquid Animations
Creates convincing fluid dynamics for motion graphics. Ideal for product visualizations and abstract animations.
Texture Melding
Excellent for transitions between different visual elements. Provides smooth organic morphing between states.
