Mastering Text and Shape Layers
Professional Guide to After Effects Layer Management
Create text layers first for country labels, then rectangles for bars. This prevents bars from covering labels and ensures proper visibility hierarchy.
Text Layer Creation Process
Font Selection
Use Arial regular font for country labels. The size specifications are provided in the instructions but can be approximated if needed.
Text Formatting
Apply Arial Bold formatting instead of all caps for better readability. Avoid excessive capitalization unless specifically required.
Layer Duplication
Duplicate layers using Command+D, then change content for each country. This maintains consistent formatting across all labels.
Layer Alignment Options
Align Selection
Select multiple layers and use align panel to position them relative to each other. Perfect for consistent spacing and positioning.
Distribute Selection
Spread out layer spacing horizontally or vertically using the distribute option. Maintains equal distance between elements.
Shape Layer Setup
Tool Preparation
Ensure nothing is selected before using rectangle tool. Select stroke option and choose 'none' from the dialog box.
Fill Configuration
Click the fill color box and use eyedropper to sample colors from existing elements. This ensures color consistency across the project.
Rectangle Creation
Draw rectangles with the configured settings. Each new shape will automatically apply the selected fill and stroke properties.
New shape layer anchor points default to the composition center, not the shape center. This can cause unexpected positioning when animating or transforming layers.
Anchor Point Positioning Options
| Feature | Default Behavior | Custom Preference |
|---|---|---|
| Initial Position | Composition Center | Shape Center |
| Manual Adjustment | Pan Behind Tool Required | Automatic Centering |
| Workflow Impact | Extra Steps Needed | Immediate Usability |
Shape Layer Best Practices
Use 'bar-' prefix for easy identification and search functionality
Prevents adding shapes to existing layers instead of creating new ones
Ensures text remains visible and maintains proper visual hierarchy
Maintains uniform color palette across all project elements
When multiple layers are selected, individual properties show hyphens for different values. Override these hyphens by typing new values to apply uniform settings across all selected layers.
Uniform Height Adjustment
Select Multiple Rectangles
Hold Command and select rectangle content from each shape layer. This allows bulk property editing across multiple elements.
Access Size Properties
With rectangles selected, view shape properties panel. Hyphenated values indicate different measurements across selected shapes.
Standardize Dimensions
Uncheck the link constraint, then enter desired height value (like 250) to make all rectangles uniform. Press return to apply changes.
