Mastering Layer Sequencing and Animation Techniques
Master Professional Animation Workflows and Layer Management
The author discovered through testing that 11 frames worked best for this animation, despite trying multiple timing variations. Sometimes the best settings come from experimentation rather than formulas.
Layer Selection Order Process
Select Top Layer
Click on the topmost layer (Noble End) first to establish selection order
Shift-Click Sequence
Hold Shift and click Desktop-P to select layers in descending order
Note Selection Order
Remember that sequence commands will stack layers based on this selection order in time
Manual Input vs Relative Movement
When multiple layers are selected, typing position values directly will move all layers to the exact same location, destroying your animation. Always use arrow keys or dragging for relative movement.
Overshoot Animation Technique
Set Final Position
Go to last keyframe and drag guidelines to mark final position
Create Overshoot
At frame 6, move layers past final position and set scale to 115%
Apply Easing
Select all keyframes and apply ease for smooth motion curves
Press the tilde key (~) above Tab while hovering over any panel to make it full screen. This works with all panels and acts as a toggle for quick workspace management.
Keyframe Labeling System
Select Keyframes
Select all related keyframes you want to group together
Assign Label Color
Right-click and assign a label color to the selected keyframes
Group Selection
Right-click on label color and select keyframe label group on all layers
The sequence layers command bases timing on layer length. If all layers span the full timeline, only the first layer will be visible after sequencing. Always trim layers to desired duration first.
Stagger Animation Workflow
Calculate Frame Delay
Determine desired delay between layers (6 frames for half animation length)
Trim Layer Duration
Go to frame 5, press Option+Right Bracket to trim to 6 frames (adds one extra)
Apply Sequence Command
Use Animation > Keyframe Assistant > Sequence Layers without overlap
Extend Layer Length
Move to timeline end, press Option+Right Bracket to extend all layers
Layer Trimming Behavior
| Feature | CTI Left of Layer End | CTI Right of Layer End |
|---|---|---|
| Option+Right Bracket Effect | Shortens layer to CTI | Extends layer to CTI |
| Use Case | Trim for sequencing | Restore full length |
Stagger Timing Variations
Adjusting Stagger Animation Speed
Reset to Beginning
Move CTI to start, press Left Bracket to slide all layers back
Set New Duration
Move to desired frame count minus one, trim with Option+Right Bracket
Re-sequence
Run Animation > Keyframe Assistant > Sequence Layers again
Extend Length
Move to timeline end, extend layers with Option+Right Bracket
To reverse layer order easily: select from bottom layer to top layer while holding Shift, cut with Command+X, then paste. After Effects remembers selection order and pastes accordingly.
