Importing Illustrator and Photoshop Files into After Effects
Master seamless file integration for motion graphics
Three Import Methods for Creative Files
Flat Graphic Import
Import as single flattened image similar to JPEG format. Quick but loses layer flexibility for editing.
Individual Layer Extraction
Extract specific layers from multi-layer files. Ideal when you only need certain elements from complex designs.
Composition Import
Full layer preservation with positioning, names, and settings intact. Creates complete After Effects composition automatically.
Photoshop vs Illustrator Import Features
| Feature | Photoshop | Illustrator |
|---|---|---|
| Layer Preservation | Full support | Full support |
| Layer Styles | Drop shadow, bevel, emboss | Vector effects only |
| Positioning Data | Maintained | Maintained |
| Layer Names | Preserved | Preserved |
Always create a dummy composition before importing creative files. The imported composition inherits duration, frame rate, and timecode from your last created comp, which could be anywhere from one frame to several hours.
Dummy Comp Creation Process
Create New Composition
Make a new comp with desired duration, frame rate, and settings. Width and height don't matter as they'll be overridden.
Set Square Pixels
Ensure pixel aspect ratio is set to square pixels for modern video compatibility across all devices.
Import Creative File
Import your Illustrator or Photoshop file as composition with retain layer sizes checked.
Delete Dummy Comp
Remove the dummy composition as it has served its purpose of setting import defaults.
Retain Layer Sizes vs Composition Cropped
Import Settings Verification
Prevents After Effects from treating files as video sequence
Preserves layer structure and positioning from original file
Makes bounding boxes match content size for easier manipulation
Ensures compatibility with modern video standards
Keep all media files, project files, and exports in one project folder. Distributing files across multiple drives makes finding assets extremely difficult later in the workflow.
After Effects Layer Organization Tools
Layer Names
Inherited from original Illustrator or Photoshop file. Can be renamed for better workflow organization.
Label Colors
Customizable color coding system. Default colors can be changed to improve timeline visibility with multiple layers.
Solo and Visibility Controls
Basic layer management tools. Limited compared to Photoshop's layer groups and advanced organization features.
