Animated Images Part 2 Video Tutorial

Master Advanced After Effects Animation Techniques

Tutorial Continuation

This tutorial builds upon Animated Images Part 1. Ensure you have completed the first part before proceeding with these advanced animation techniques.

What You'll Learn

Balloon Animation

Create looping animations using keyframes and expressions. Learn to offset multiple elements for natural movement.

Text Animation

Apply dynamic text effects using After Effects presets. Master layering and timing for professional results.

Composition Control

Use null objects to control entire compositions. Scale and position multiple layers simultaneously.

Welcome to the second installment of our comprehensive Animated Images tutorial series! In this advanced lesson from Noble Desktop, you'll master the art of breathing life into static photographs through sophisticated animation techniques that transform ordinary images into compelling visual stories.

This tutorial builds directly upon the foundational concepts covered in our Animated Images Part 1 tutorial, introducing more complex motion graphics principles that professional animators use daily in commercial projects.

Balloon Animation

Creating realistic balloon movement requires subtle timing and natural motion curves that mimic real-world physics. 1. In After Effects, select one of the balloons using the Selection tool. 2. With the Playhead positioned at frame zero, set your initial Position keyframe by pressing P to reveal the Position property and clicking the stopwatch icon. 3. Advance the Playhead approximately one second forward (24 frames at 24fps). 4. Drag the selected balloon downward to create a gentle floating motion—aim for subtle movement rather than dramatic displacement. 5. Hold ALT while clicking the Position stopwatch to activate expression mode. 6. Type "loopOut();" to create seamless, continuous animation that cycles indefinitely. 7. Repeat this process for the remaining balloons, staggering each animation by 8-10 frames to achieve organic, non-synchronized movement that feels natural. 8. Select all keyframes and apply Easy Ease (F9) to create smooth acceleration and deceleration curves that eliminate mechanical motion.

Creating Looped Balloon Movement

1

Set Initial Position

Place playhead at beginning and create position keyframe for selected balloon element

2

Create Movement

Move playhead one second forward and adjust balloon position downward

3

Add Expression

ALT-click Position stopwatch and type LoopOut() to create continuous loop

4

Apply Easy Ease

Smooth animation transitions by applying Easy Ease to all keyframes

Animation Timing

Offset each balloon's animation slightly to create natural, organic movement rather than synchronized motion.

Text

Professional text animation elevates your composition from amateur to broadcast-quality. The key lies in choosing animations that complement rather than compete with your primary visual elements. 9. Create two Text layers using the Type tool and input your desired copy—consider hierarchy and readability when selecting fonts and sizes. 10. Position one Text layer beneath the middle balloon in the timeline to ensure proper layering and visual depth. 11. Access the Effects & Presets panel from the Window menu if not already visible. 12. Navigate to the Text Animation > Animate In folder, which contains professionally designed presets optimized for various project types. 13. Preview several animation options before selecting—consider your project's tone and pacing when choosing between subtle fades, dynamic reveals, or kinetic text treatments. Apply your chosen preset to both Text layers for visual consistency.

Text Layer Setup and Animation

1

Create Text Layers

Generate two separate text layers with your desired content

2

Position Strategically

Move one text layer beneath the middle balloon layer for proper visual hierarchy

3

Apply Preset Effects

Navigate to Effects & Presets, find Text Animation Animate In options, and apply to both layers

Layer Organization

Proper layer positioning ensures text appears integrated with your balloon animation rather than as separate elements.

Animating Entire Composition

The final step involves creating a cohesive camera move that unifies all elements into a polished, cinematic experience. This technique simulates camera movement without the complexity of 3D space. 14. Generate a new Null Object (Layer > New > Null Object), which serves as an invisible control layer for coordinating multiple elements. 15. Parent all visible layers to the Null by using the pick whip or selecting the Null from each layer's Parent dropdown menu. 16. At the timeline's beginning, establish baseline keyframes for both Scale and Position properties on the Null layer—this creates your starting point for the camera move. 17. Move the Playhead forward approximately two seconds to allow your previous animations to establish themselves before the camera movement begins. 18. Increase the Null layer's Scale value to create a zoom-in effect—typically 110-150% provides noticeable movement without appearing excessive. 19. Fine-tune the Null layer's Position to maintain centered framing as the scale change may shift your composition's balance point. 20. Select all newly created keyframes across both properties to prepare for timing refinement. 21. Apply Easy Ease to create professional motion curves that begin and end smoothly, avoiding abrupt starts and stops that characterize amateur work.

Null Object Composition Control

1

Create Null Layer

Generate new null object to serve as master controller for all animation elements

2

Parent All Layers

Connect all existing layers to the null object for unified control

3

Set Master Keyframes

Create initial keyframes for both Scale and Position properties on null layer

4

Animate and Center

Increase scale and adjust position to maintain centered composition after two seconds

Master Control Benefits

Using null objects allows you to animate entire compositions as single units while preserving individual element animations.
