After Effects Tips & Tricks Part 1

Copy Expression Only

Transferring expressions between properties is a fundamental skill that can dramatically accelerate your After Effects workflow. Instead of manually retyping complex expressions, use this streamlined approach: First, toggle open any property that already contains an expression. Navigate to Edit—Copy Expression Only in the menu bar. Select your target property that doesn't currently have an expression applied, then hit the stopwatch to establish a keyframe. Finally, paste the expression using Cmd+V (Mac) or Ctrl+V (PC). This technique becomes invaluable when working with intricate mathematical expressions or custom scripts that would be time-consuming to recreate manually.

Reordering Layers

Layer organization is crucial for maintaining efficient project structures, especially in complex compositions with dozens of elements. To quickly reorder layers while preserving their relationships: Shift-select all target layers in your desired sequence order—this selection order determines the final arrangement. Use Cmd+X (Mac) or Ctrl+X (PC) to cut the selected layers, then immediately paste them back with Cmd+V (Mac) or Ctrl+V (PC). The layers will now appear in your new specified order. This method is particularly useful when organizing elements by depth, animation timing, or logical groupings for better project management.

Spatial Interpolation

Spatial interpolation controls the smoothness and quality of motion paths between keyframes, directly impacting the professional appearance of your animations. To apply spatial interpolation: Select any two keyframes on a position property, then right-click on either keyframe to access the context menu. Navigate to Keyframe Interpolation and locate the Spatial dropdown menu—the first option controls how your object travels through space. Select your preferred interpolation method and click OK. This technique transforms jerky, linear movements into fluid, natural motion that feels more organic and visually appealing to audiences.

Edit Original

The Edit Original feature creates a seamless bridge between After Effects and source applications, enabling non-destructive editing workflows that maintain asset quality and project efficiency. Within the Project Panel, select any Illustrator or Photoshop asset that requires modification. Access Edit—Edit Original from the main menu, which automatically launches the original file in its native software environment. Make your desired alterations using the full feature set of the source application, then save the asset normally. Return to After Effects and wait a few moments—the software automatically detects changes and updates all instances of the asset throughout your project, preserving any applied effects or transformations.

Time Reverse

Time reversal is an essential technique for creating seamless loops, transitions, and complex animation sequences without manually repositioning keyframes. To reverse any animated layer: Right-click on the target layer containing keyframes, then navigate to Time—Time Reverse Layer in the context menu. This operation flips the entire layer's timeline behavior, causing all animations to play in reverse chronological order. Keep in mind that untrimmed layers may position their keyframes at unexpected timeline locations. For optimal results, trim your layers to the desired duration before applying time reversal—this ensures precise control over where reversed animations begin and end.

Sequence Layers

Layer sequencing automates the creation of progressive animations, making it indispensable for motion graphics workflows involving multiple similar elements. Begin by Shift-selecting several layers that you want to animate in succession. Right-click on any selected layer and navigate to Keyframe Assistant—Sequence Layers. This command automatically arranges the layers to play one after another, creating smooth sequential animations perfect for revealing text lines, gallery images, or UI elements. As with time reversal, trimming layers beforehand prevents unexpectedly long sequences and gives you precise control over timing intervals between each element's appearance.

Now, if I took this into my graph editor here, you can actually see effects over here. You see how this is nice and smooth and suddenly it drops off sharply. So yeah, spatial interpolation is basically asking like, Hey, do you want to change the shape of its path?

You're going to select it, and then you hit command or control. You right click on the particular layer, the keyframes on. And then we've got a time reverse layer. Now check it out. You can even visually see that the keyframes are different.

Reverse keyframes. Now if you're working with a very long layer here because you start from the down here, if I hit time reverse, it's going to put those keyframes all the way at the end.

Now, we did a full tutorial on this, but I'll do a version here, so I'm going to go into my wings pre comp and I actually want to go into fast wings pre comp because the way that I do the wings and this was a frame by frame animation was that I drew many the frames in Photoshop.

If you have like say, an effect where you want one layer, you know, let's say you have a hand reaching into a chip bag. So, you know, an animation like that, you can have the hand reaching into the chip bag, animate it and split the layer at such a point so it'll look like the hand is disappearing into the chip bag.

Everything that's checkered is going to be transparent, which means if I put this animation over a different background, that background will show will then show.
