Welcome to the VDCI course Introduction to SketchUp. This comprehensive tutorial will transform you from a complete beginner into a confident SketchUp user, equipped with the essential skills to create professional 3D models. Before diving into the powerful features of this industry-standard software, let's ensure you have the necessary course files properly organized on your system. You should have already downloaded the zip file called skp-101-filedownloads from the VDCI portal—this package contains all the practice datasets and example files we'll be working with throughout our journey together.

Locate the downloaded file on your system—in this example, I've saved it to my C drive for easy access. To extract the zip file, right-click on it and select "Extract Files." This will create a new folder called skp-101-filedownloads containing all the meticulously crafted exercise files, reference materials, and sample models that will guide your learning experience. Take a moment to browse through these files to familiarize yourself with what we'll be creating together. Proper file organization is crucial for any professional workflow, so consider creating a dedicated workspace folder for all your SketchUp projects.

With your files properly organized, we're ready to launch SketchUp and begin our exploration of 3D modeling. Open SketchUp from your applications folder or desktop shortcut. Upon first launch, the software will prompt you to sign in—this authentication step ensures you have access to the latest features, cloud storage capabilities, and collaboration tools that make SketchUp an industry favorite.

Click the prominent blue "Sign In" button to begin the authentication process. SketchUp will automatically launch your default web browser, directing you to a secure login page where you'll enter your credentials. This cloud-based authentication system not only protects your work but also enables seamless synchronization across devices and access to SketchUp's extensive 3D Warehouse of user-generated models. After entering your username and password, you'll be automatically redirected back to the application.

Once authenticated, minimize your browser window to return to SketchUp, where you'll encounter the Welcome dialog box—your gateway to the SketchUp ecosystem. This intelligent interface remembers your preferences and recent work, making it easy to jump back into projects or start fresh. The dialog offers several pathways: template selection for different industries and use cases, quick access to recent files, and license management for subscription users. If you're curious about your current subscription status, clicking "Licensing" will display your active plan details and available features.

For this course, we'll be working with the Architectural Inches template, which provides the optimal settings, units, and default styles for architectural and design projects. This template is specifically calibrated for precision work in feet and inches, making it perfect for building design, interior layouts, and construction documentation. Select the Architectural Inches template to launch SketchUp with these professional settings pre-configured.

Now that SketchUp is fully loaded, let's conduct a comprehensive tour of the user interface—understanding this workspace is fundamental to becoming an efficient modeler. At the very top of your screen sits the title bar, which houses SketchUp's extensive menu system. These drop-down menus—File, Edit, View, Camera, Draw, Tools, Window, and Help—contain virtually every function available in the software, organized logically by purpose and workflow stage.


Directly below the title bar, you'll find the menu bar area, which serves as the home for SketchUp's customizable toolbars. This flexible system allows you to create a personalized workspace tailored to your specific modeling needs and preferences. Unlike many CAD programs with rigid interfaces, SketchUp's toolbar system adapts to your workflow, whether you prefer minimal setups or comprehensive tool arrays.

To explore the available toolbars, right-click anywhere on the menu bar to reveal the complete list of toolbar options. Active toolbars are indicated by yellow checkmarks—you'll notice that only the "Getting Started" toolbar is initially active, providing new users with essential tools without overwhelming complexity. This thoughtful design philosophy reflects SketchUp's commitment to accessibility while maintaining professional-grade capabilities.

For our course work, we'll activate two additional toolbars that provide comprehensive modeling capabilities. First, click on "Large Tool Set" to activate this comprehensive collection of modeling tools. You'll see this toolbar appear along the left side of your screen, providing easy access to drawing, modification, and construction tools. Next, scroll to the bottom of the toolbar list and activate the "Standard" toolbar by clicking on it. This toolbar will appear at the top of your interface, offering file operations and view controls.

SketchUp's interface flexibility extends to toolbar positioning—you can customize the layout to match your working preferences. Notice the small dotted grip handle on the left side of the Standard toolbar. Click and drag this handle to reposition the toolbar anywhere along the interface perimeter. This level of customization ensures that your most-used tools are always within easy reach, maximizing your modeling efficiency.

The heart of SketchUp lies in its central drawing area—a sophisticated 3D workspace where your ideas take shape. This isn't just a flat canvas but a true three-dimensional environment where you can navigate, construct, and visualize with unprecedented ease. The drawing area's intelligent grid system and inference engine work together to guide your modeling with precision while maintaining the intuitive feel that makes SketchUp unique among 3D applications.

On the right side of your screen, you'll find the Default Tray—a powerful organizational system for SketchUp's various panels and dialog boxes. This collapsible interface houses everything from material libraries and component browsers to advanced rendering controls and measurement tools. Each section can be expanded or collapsed using the arrow buttons, allowing you to reveal only the information you need for your current task. This contextual approach keeps your workspace clean while ensuring that advanced features remain instantly accessible.


If your Default Tray isn't visible, don't worry—it can be easily restored through the Window menu. Navigate to Window > Default Tray > Show Tray to make it appear. The tray system is designed to dock intelligently along any edge of your screen, adapting to different monitor configurations and personal preferences. If you find your tray floating freely, simply click and drag its title bar toward your preferred screen edge—top, bottom, left, or right—and it will automatically snap into position. Most professionals prefer the right-side configuration as it provides easy access while preserving maximum drawing space.

Finally, examine the status bar at the bottom of your screen—this information-rich strip provides real-time feedback about your modeling activities. The status bar consists of three distinct zones, each serving a crucial role in professional modeling workflows. The left section displays identifier information, including geolocation data for site-specific projects and general model statistics. The center section functions as an intelligent tooltip system, providing contextual help as you hover over different tools and interface elements.

The measurement box in the bottom-right corner represents one of SketchUp's most powerful precision features. This dynamic display shows real-time measurements as you draw, but more importantly, it accepts direct numeric input for exact dimension control. This dual functionality—visual feedback combined with precise input—enables both intuitive sketching and technical accuracy. For example, when drawing a line, you'll see the length update continuously as you move your cursor. However, you can override this by typing specific values like "15'" for 15 feet, then pressing Enter to create exactly the dimension you need.

Let's verify that your interface matches our course configuration: you should see the Getting Started toolbar at the top, the Large Tool Set docked on the left, the Standard toolbar also positioned at the top, the Default Tray anchored to the right, and a clean gray background that indicates you're using the Architectural Inches template. This standardized setup ensures that all course instructions will match your screen exactly.
