Optimizing Your Revit MEP Mechanical Project for PDFing: Final Steps
Master final optimization steps for professional MEP documentation
This video builds directly on the tagging work completed in previous sessions. Ensure you have completed the tagging module before proceeding with these final optimization steps.
Pre-PDF Optimization Checklist
Verify that all tags fit properly within their designated spaces
Ensure sheet titles display correctly without overflow
Confirm consistency in drawn by, checked by, and other metadata
Provide complete project navigation for reviewers
Protect your work before implementing title block changes
Title Block Text Hierarchy Options
3/8-inch Text
Largest size for primary project identification and client names. May cause overflow issues in constrained spaces.
1/4-inch Text
Balanced size for sheet titles and secondary information. Provides good readability while preventing overflow.
3/16-inch Text
Smallest recommended size for detailed information and notes. Use sparingly for supporting text only.
Title Block Editing Process
Select and Edit Family
Select the title block and choose Edit Family to access text formatting controls
Adjust Text Size
Reduce text size from 3/8-inch to 1/4-inch to prevent overflow while maintaining hierarchy
Load and Overwrite
Load the modified family back into the project and overwrite the existing version
Verify Results
Check that the title now fits properly and maintains visual hierarchy
Select all sheets simultaneously using Shift-click to edit shared parameters like Drawn By and Checker across the entire set, saving significant time compared to individual sheet editing.
Sheet Parameter Editing Methods
| Feature | Individual Sheet Editing | Multi-Sheet Selection |
|---|---|---|
| Time Efficiency | High time investment | Minimal time required |
| Consistency Risk | High error potential | Guaranteed consistency |
| Best Use Case | Sheet-specific information | Common parameters |
Creating a Sheet Index
Access Sheet List Function
Navigate to View > Schedules > Sheet List (not Schedule/Quantities)
Configure Fields
Add Sheet Number and Sheet Name as primary fields for the index
Set Sorting Parameters
Sort by Sheet Number to maintain logical order in the index
Place on Cover Sheet
Position the sheet index aligned with the title block edge for consistent printing
Optional Sheet Index Parameters
Current Revision Date
Tracks when each sheet was last revised. Useful for projects with frequent updates and multiple revision cycles.
Current Revision Issued
Shows revision status and issuance information. Important for formal submittal and approval tracking.
Revision Number
Displays current revision iteration for each sheet. Essential for version control in collaborative environments.
PDF Export Configuration
Create Sheet Set
Organize sheets into named sets like 'In Session—Final' for easy reuse and organization
Configure Display Options
Uncheck 'Hide Unchecked Views and Sheets' and filter to show only sheet views
Set Print Parameters
Configure page size to 30x42 Arch E1 with 100% zoom to maintain proper scale
Define Export Location
Choose destination folder and create descriptive filename with project identifier and initials
PDF export may use raster processing for 3D views with shading and shadows, which increases file size but preserves visual quality. This is normal behavior for complex visualization elements.
