One of the most powerful advantages of InDesign's book feature is its intelligent auto page numbering system. When you add or remove pages anywhere within your multi-document project, all subsequent files automatically adjust their page numbers—eliminating the tedious manual updates that plague traditional workflows. This dynamic numbering system is essential for professional publications where content changes are inevitable and deadlines are tight.

1. Open the book file you created in the previous exercise. Look for yourname-wine book.indb in your InDesign Class folder. If you skipped the previous exercise, you'll need to complete it first to follow along.

2. In the Book panel, examine the page numbers displayed next to each of the four document sections. Currently, they align perfectly—but this setup required manual configuration. Understanding the two approaches to cross-document page numbering will help you choose the right method for your projects.

   Method #1: Manual Section Starts (Current setup) — Each file contains individual "section start" settings that define its starting page number. While this offers precise control, it creates a maintenance nightmare: adding pages to any middle section requires manually updating every subsequent file's numbering.

   Method #2: Automated Book Numbering (Recommended approach) — The Book panel manages all page numbering automatically. Add or remove pages anywhere in your publication, and InDesign instantly recalculates numbering across all linked documents. This is the professional standard for complex, multi-file publications.

Setting up the Book

Before converting your individual files, you'll establish the book-level numbering rules that will govern how pages flow between documents.

1. Access the Book panel menu and select Book Page Numbering Options.

2. Configure these critical settings:
   • Continue on next even page — Ensures chapters begin on left-hand pages
   • Enable Insert Blank Page — Automatically adds pages to maintain proper spreads
   • Enable Automatically Update Page & Section Numbers — The key to dynamic numbering
   • Click OK to apply.

   Professional Insight: The "even page" setting aligns with traditional book design where new chapters start on verso (left) pages, creating natural reading breaks. The automatic blank page insertion maintains spread integrity—crucial for publications with facing-page layouts, bleeds, or design elements that span gutters.

Converting the Chapter Files from Manual to Automatic Numbering

Now you'll convert each document from manual section numbering to the book's automated system. This process removes individual file numbering constraints and places all control with the Book panel.

1. In the Book panel, select yourname-wine2. From the Book panel menu , choose Document Numbering Options.

2. InDesign opens the selected file and displays the numbering dialog. Select Automatic Page Numbering near the top of the panel, then click OK. This removes the file's manual page number override.

3. Save and close the file to commit the changes.

4. Time-Saving Tip: For the remaining files, use this faster method. In the Book panel, double-click directly on the page numbers displayed next to yourname-wine3. This instantly opens the file and launches the Document Numbering Options dialog—no menu navigation required.

5. Select Automatic Page Numbering and click OK.

6. Save and close yourname-wine3.

7. Repeat this streamlined process for yourname-wine4 to complete the conversion.

8. Test your automated numbering system by opening yourname-wine1 and inserting a new page at the end. Return to the Book panel and watch as all subsequent page numbers automatically adjust throughout the entire publication—no manual intervention required.

   Best Practice for New Projects: When starting fresh publications, implement automatic numbering from the beginning to avoid conversion work entirely:

   • Create your book file and configure Book Page Numbering Options first
   • Build your Chapter 1 document and add it to the book (avoid setting any manual Numbering & Section Options)
   • Create subsequent chapter files and add them to the book in sequence
   • Each new document inherits proper numbering automatically upon addition

   This workflow eliminates numbering conflicts and ensures seamless pagination from project inception. As your publication evolves through revisions, the intelligent numbering system adapts automatically—a crucial advantage in today's fast-paced publishing environment where content changes are constant and turnaround times continue to compress.
