Creating Sample Lines Using Points and Polylines in Civil 3D
Master Advanced Sample Line Creation Methods
Sample Line Creation Methods in Civil 3D
Point-Based Creation
Create sample lines by selecting two points on screen. Offers maximum flexibility for non-perpendicular sections across roadways.
Polyline-Based Creation
Use existing polylines as the basis for sample lines. Ideal for complex geometries and predetermined survey paths.
Station-Based Creation
Traditional method creating perpendicular sample lines at specific stations along the alignment centerline.
Sample lines created with points or polylines associate with the station where they cross the alignment, not necessarily where they sample. This provides flexibility in section analysis while maintaining alignment references.
Accessing Sample Line Properties
Navigate to Tool Space
Open Tool Space and expand the Alignments section to locate your sample line collections.
Select Centerline Alignment
Choose the alignment where your sample lines are connected, such as Dev Branch in this example.
Access Sample Line Collection
Right-click on the sample line collection and select Properties to view all configuration options.
Modify Settings
Adjust layer assignments, styles, swath widths, and offsets as needed for your project requirements.
Sample Line Properties Tabs
| Feature | Tab | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Information | Basic Properties | Name, description, sample line details |
| Sections | Data Sources | Surfaces and corridors for sampling |
| Section Views | View Management | Created section views and plot styles |
| Materials | Volume Calculations | Material types and calculation methods |
You can modify swath width values after creation if you find you're not sampling far enough outside your corridor. Change the offset values in the sample line properties to extend your sampling range.
Volume Calculation Methods Available
Creating Sample Lines with Pick Points Method
Initiate Sample Lines Command
Type Sample Lines and press Enter, then select your target alignment and confirm.
Select Group from Drawing
Choose an existing sample line to work within the same collection and maintain consistency.
Choose Pick Points Method
Select Pick Points From Screen from the creation methods dropdown menu.
Define Sample Line
Click two points to define your sample line. Note that it doesn't need to be perpendicular to the alignment.
Point-Based Sample Lines
Creating Sample Lines with Polylines
Create Reference Polyline
Use the PL command to draw a polyline that represents your desired sample line path.
Access Sample Lines Command
Launch Sample Lines command, select your alignment, and choose the appropriate sample line group.
Select Existing Polylines Method
Choose Existing Polylines from the creation methods dropdown.
Convert and Clean Up
Select your polyline to convert it to a sample line, then erase the original polyline to maintain drawing cleanliness.
Civil 3D doesn't automatically delete source polylines when creating sample lines. Remember to manually erase the original polyline after conversion to keep your drawing organized.
Sample Line Creation Best Practices
Ensures sample lines associate with the proper centerline
Maintains organization and uniform properties
Ensures complete sampling of corridor and surrounding terrain
Remove temporary polylines to keep drawings professional
Confirm sample lines reference correct alignment stations
Verify all necessary surfaces and corridors are included
Sample lines created with points or polylines don't have to be perpendicular to the alignment, providing flexibility for complex section analysis.
