Adding Labels to Parcels in Civil 3D: A Step-by-Step Guide

This Civil 3D tutorial walks through adding labels to parcels in civil 3d, covering essential tools and techniques for your projects.

In this video, we're going to talk about adding labels to parcels. So, to do that, I'm going to navigate up to the tabs of the ribbon bar.

I'm going to go to Annotate, and I'm going to go to Add Labels. When I select Add Labels, a new Add Labels window will pop up. The options that we have inside of this window are Features, Label Types, and Note Label Style and Marker Style.

From here, these options below will change based on the feature type that we have. So, if I go ahead and drop down, I have the options for Line and Curve, Alignment, Parcel, Profile, Section, Surface, Intersection, Type Network, Pressure Network, Survey Figures, and Catchment. In this video, we're going to be dealing with parcels.

I'm going to go ahead and select Parcel, and you'll notice that Civil 3D now populates the bottom portion as Label Type, Line Label Style, and Curve Label Style. So, I'm going to go ahead and drop down under Label Type, and we have options for the Label Types. We want to create a Single Segment, Multiple Segment, Replace Multiple Segments, Area, and Replace Area.

Moving on from here, we're going to first place a Multiple Segment Label, and then we're going to place a Single Segment Label. So, I'm going to go ahead and select Multiple Segment, and then I am going to choose the Label Styles that I'm going to use. For this video, we're going to go ahead and use the ones that are already in the drawing.

In another video, we're going to create our own Label Styles for our Parcel Segment Labels. So, I'm going to go ahead and drop down my Line Label Style and look at what we have available. I am going to go ahead and stay with my Bearing Over Distance, and then my Curve Label Style, I am going to keep my Delta Over Length and Radius.

I'm going to go ahead and click Add. The other options that we have are Table Tag Numbering, that's if you have a table inside of Civil 3D, which we'll go over in a future video, whether or not these labels will become tags rather than text. And then we have the options for how we would like the Text Object Prompt method, whether we want to suppress prompts, command line, or dialog boxes.

I'm going to leave it as command line. So, I'm going to go ahead and click Add, and what Civil 3D is going to do is prompt me in the command line. It says, Select Parcel to be Labeled by clicking on Area Label. So, the Area Label is the label in the center of a parcel.

I'm going to zoom in and choose Property 3 here. I'm going to select it, and then I'm going to be directed to select a labeling direction. I am going to choose Clockwise, and you'll notice that Civil 3D now places labels on each of the segments on the outer boundary of my Property Number 3. From here, I'm going to go ahead and drop down.

I'm going to select Single Segment. I'm going to leave my Line Label Style and my Curve Label Style the same, and I'm going to go ahead and click Add, and then Civil 3D is going to

Prompt me to select my entity. So, instead of selecting my Area Label, I'll now select a segment that I want to label, and for comparison's sake, when I selected the Area Label, Civil 3D automatically chose to place the label at the midpoint of each segment.

With the Single Segment Label Type, we have the option of placing it wherever we click. So, I will click over here to place a label. I'll click down here to place a label, and then I'll click somewhere in the middle to place the last label.

So, what we're going to do now is close, and then I will meet you in the next video where we'll discuss the different parts of a parcel and the different labels that the parcel has.
